Big News for Women of Color!!!

Fashion Fair Cosmetics has appointed celebrity makeup artist Sam Fine as its creative makeup director. The Chicago-based prestige cosmetics brand for women of color is tapping Fine, a 20-year industry veteran, to bring his experience with the fashion editorial world, global beauty brands and celebrities to Fashion Fair’s consumers. Fine will also advise on the creation of new products and, in 2012, Fashion Fair will unveil Sam Fine for Fashion Fair trend collections. Fine has created covers and pages for magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, Essence and Marie Claire. He was chosen as the first African-American spokesperson for Revlon in 1992 and Cover Girl Cosmetics in 1995. His clients have included Jennifer Hudson, Vanessa Williams, Iman, Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks. Fine has also written a book, “Fine Beauty: Beauty Basics and Beyond for African-American Women,” followed by his instructional DVD, “Fine: The Basics of Beauty.” Fashion Fair Cosmetics is a wholly owned subsidiary of Johnson Publishing Company LLC sold in 650 prestige stores across the U.S., London, Paris, Canada and the Caribbean.

We talked with him about his new gig.
For those who aren’t familiar with Fashion Fair, can you tell us a little more about it?Most women of color are spoken to in the drugstore, but this brand is luxury. Fashion Fair has been around 38 years and it’s a prestige brand that has never really changed its mission—it’s always been there for women of color. It’s a staple for me—my mom used it!—so to team up with them is really like coming home.
Tell us about your collaboration with Fashion Fair.I’ll be looking at color and shade ranges for the company, and also developing a color-based collection that will come out in the spring. Fashion Fair already has a ton of great core products—I’ll be injecting newness and fashion and more makeup-artist-driven products into the line.
You have so many loyal Twitter followers. What’s the biggest makeup question you get from them? The questions I constantly get are, ‘What foundation can I buy?’ What concealer can I buy?’ I always tell women to think about it before you go to the store. It’s like grocery shopping—you don’t go grocery shopping hungry. Think about whether you want something long-lasting. Do you want something with more coverage? Less coverage? Thinking about it beforehand helps you make a better choice—and it helps the advisor in the store to guide you.
Many women with dark complexions tell us that they shy away from powder because it can leave a gray cast. Is it ok to skip it?Powder is to foundation as topcoat is to nail polish. It’s a setting agent. You can build as much coverage as you want, but you have to set it. It might take trial and error, but you can find the right one. The best powders for dark skin are usually in the brands that target women of color. Fashion Fair makes a great loose powder—RuPaul is a fan of it.
Have brands gotten better at all over the years at addressing women of color? It’s still a struggle. You have brands that have never spoken to this woman. I think some of the brands just don’t know how to have the conversation. Because it’s more than just making darker shades—you have to reach out. Many brands try, but their attempts fall short. They launch the colors, but then get rid of them later because they say they didn’t sell—but really, they didn’t sell because of a lack of outreach. With Fashion Fair, I love that I’ll have the ability to train people behind the counter, as well. We’ll make sure we’re really talking to this customer.

I am so happy and so proud for Sam!!!!! Congratulations Sam Fine....Fashion Fair could not have chosen a better person.  I can't wait to see the new changes!!!!!

Kim Kardashian Wedding Look!!

Kim Kardashian Plays It Safe With Wedding Day Makeup Look

While she took a fashion risk by donning a diamond headpiece when she walked down the aisle on August 20, Kim Kardashian stuck to her signature makeup look for her big day.
VIDEO: See Kim Kardashian's wedding video!
The bride, 30, who wore a custom-made ivory Vera Wang gown, kept it simple (for her) with smoky eyes, full brows, pink blush and glossy pink lips. The only over-the-top touch: what appeared to be several sets of false lashes.
FIRST PIC: Kim's wedding dress!
"I plan for her makeup to be clean, radiant, feminine, modern, and classic," the reality superstars' makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic, told Allure days before the wedding.
While some beauty critics were surprised that Kardashian didn't opt for a more glamorous look, others praised the brunette beauty for showing some restraint considering the lavishness of the affair.

MAC Cosmetics gives local woman face time!!

Shirley Daley has on her sweet face during a recent lunch.
It's undoubtedly the same bright smile that helped sway MAC judges to select the Newport News resident as one of the faces of its fall cosmetics campaign.
Daley, 30, has been basking in the attention since the announcement three weeks ago.
"A global cosmetics company chose me to be one of its faces," she says. "That still blows me away."
She, along with four other ladies and one guy, bested thousands of entrants to represent the brand whose ambassadors have included superstars Mary J. Blige and Lady Gaga.
Winners were chosen because of their "inimitable style, heart and soul," says a release from MAC, which stands for Make-up Art Cosmetics.
"I felt important for a whole day," says Daley.
She dons dramatic eye color and strikes a quietly sexy, commanding gaze in a photo of her makeover. In person, her laid-back beauty is equally arresting.
Her makeup is simple, and her curly black hair, which she cut last fall and donated in honor of a friend who died of cancer, is fuss-free and chic. She's trend-savvy in her black T-shirt with a lace-inset neckline and beading along the front side, black shrug, black jeans and flat sandals.
A stranger can't help but notice, and he interrupts her lunch.
"Excuse me, didn't you win a contest?" he asks.
Daley blushes and humbly affirms. But after he passes, she gushes.
"That's so cool."
Her bubbly personality bears no trace of the low self-esteem she says she wrestled with while growing up in Cleveland.
"I thought I was the ugliest, blackest thing," Daley says.
She was placed in foster care at age 4, and at age 6, "I was this scraggly little thing," she says. "Then I started getting fluffy when I was 8 or 9."
Her foster mother recognized Daley had a gift and encouraged her to sing in church. By fourth grade Daley was attending the Cleveland School of the Arts, from which she graduated.
She joined Morgan State University's choir and got to travel the world. Since 2001, she has been a member of the gospel-tinged Group Therapy, which has appeared on BET and is based in D.C.
"I can't imagine not singing, not performing," Daley says. About three years ago, she moved to Hampton Roads after marrying a Navy man who's also a meteorologist.
She says her ultimate goal is simply to be an inspiration.
"That's important to me, empowering women like me," she says. "I'm representing two demographics: plus-size and African American."
James Gager, senior vice president and creative director of MAC, said in a release that the company wanted to go beyond just making up a pretty face and focusing on one part of the makeover. He also was interested in the narrative of why the MAC loyalists wanted to be a part of the campaign. As a result, the six new faces represent diversity in age, race and sex.
Daley's winning entry touts, "I am going to change the world, one smile at a time."

"Material Girl"

Lourdes Leon seems to have inherited mum Madonna's desire to rule the world and appears to be prematurely experimenting with adulthood while she does so.
The mini-mogul launched a fashion collection at the age of 13 and now, at 14 has released her first beauty line.
Despite being of an age where most girls are just being allowed to start playing with makeup, 'Lola' displayed a very adult look at the launch of Material Girl Beauty in New York City 2 August.

NYX Cosmetics

NYX Cosmetics develops 'Jerseylicious'-inspired makeup palette.   NYX Cosmetics has teamed up with the Style Network for a multiplatform sponsorship that includes the creation of a co-branded makeup palette inspired by the network’s series “Jerseylicious.”  The new Haute Jersey Leopard Couture gives “Jerseylicious” fans the chance to fashion their own signature smoky eye and sun-kissed faux tan glow. The partnership also includes exclusive short-form content to air on Style and online at NYXCosmetics.com. NYX will be integrated into a new episode of “Jerseylicious” premiering Sept.18 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Style.
As part of the partnership, Style has created a custom-tailored interstitial that will begin airing in August offering tips for viewers on how the new NYX palette can have them looking like their favorite “Jerseylicious” stylist. Then on Sept. 18, the product will be featured on a new episode of the series with “Jerseylicious” stars Alexa, aka “The Glam Fairy,” and a bridal makeup artist in the tri-state area, helping makeup artist and friend Olivia create a variety of “how to” videos for NYX to post to their website.
Available in stores and online now, the new “Jerseylicious”-inspired product is co-branded with the show’s logo and tune-in information. Valued at $25, the makeup kit is draped with a leopard pattern in gold and black. It features 24 eye shadows in matte and shimmery hues, four bronzers, two micro Mega Shine lip glosses, two blushes and a double-sided mirror.
